OUR STORY
Forsythe Family Farms is owned and operated by Jim and Leslie Forsythe. Jim began farming in the Markham area in 1972 growing cash crops such as feed corn and progressed to growing sweet corn to stay busy during the summer months. He evolved from growing and marketing fresh vegetables at a roadside wagon to an established outdoor market and pick your own at 14th and McCowan Rd. In 1986 our farm relocated to 10539 Kennedy Rd. Markham and has developed far beyond what we initially imagined.
With the encroaching urbanization and the influence of our sons, our farm’s focus has expanded. With our Markham roots established in marketing our own and locally grown produce, we’ve grown to include becoming a fun family destination where people can enjoy what farms have to offer – delicious food, outdoor fun and time to relax with family and friends.
We’ve been establishing roots in Greenbank, just north of Port Perry since 1997. Our Greenbank farm is mainly our production farm where we grow strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes, squash and pumpkins to supply our Markham location. We also have our herd of pasture raised beef cattle in Greenbank. This location is only open to the public for Pick Your Own strawberries. School tours will be starting at this location in the fall of 2008.
We feel it is important for everyone to remain linked to farms, knowing and caring about where their food comes from.
Our school tours have developed with this mission in mind. We have been hosting groups from the regions of York, Durham and Toronto for over 18 years. Our educational program extends beyond structured school tours and while visiting you will see numerous educational displays. May through to October 31st we have a farm educator present each weekend, 9 am until 3 pm to enhance your visit - encouraging your participation in learning about and caring for the animals as well as answering any questions you may have.
Our own education is ongoing. We are continually seeking out new ideas and better ways of doing things through tours, conferences and suggestions from our staff and customers. This way we strive to keep our farm fresh and fun for our family, staff and our customers.
Our motto
FARMS ARE FUN
No Smoking, No Outside Food and No Dogs
